A musical ritual and a testimony of deep longing. Desire Marea from South Africa will perform in Prague for the first time
You think that I’m horny/Baby you arouse me/And I don’t even wanna fuck you/I just wanna be with you, sing South African artists Desire Marea on their debut album Desire. Desire, modern love and loss, and above all music that has almost ceremonial dimensions, meet here with avant-garde electronic production drawing on Western tradition and local gqom. Desire Marea will be presented to the Czech audience for the first time on 22 October at Kasárna Karlín, with a four-piece band line-up.
The eponymous 2020 debut opened up deeply personal themes and worked mostly in the field of club rhythms and arrangements. This year’s On The Romance of Being takes a more pompous spiritual route, reflecting the artist’s experience with spiritual healing in epic ballads. It was recorded with a thirteen-piece orchestra and its sound blends elements from gospel to free jazz. Desire Marea was previously part of the South African collective FAKA, with whom he has travelled to European festivals such as Unsound and Sónar. In his solo career, he has focused on exploring his own identity or the boundary between the spiritual and the erotic.
