Endless loops of analog tapes, hypnotic soundscapes, and a melancholy that defies description.
After three years, ambient rock ’n’ roll star William Basinski returns to Prague on September 21 to perform at Gabriel Loci and its iconic Garden of Eden (Rajská zahrada).
William Basinski came to global attention with his album *The Disintegration Loops*, in which he captured the quiet mourning following the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York. Digitized tape recordings wear down and dissolve in endless loops, with sounds layering upon one another with subtle shifts.
His best-known albums, such as *Melancholia* and *Lamentations*, operate on a similar principle, capturing loss, sorrow, and the irreversibility of time. In recent years, Basinski has returned primarily to working with his extensive archive and reviving memories through melodies that reach deep into the past. He thus promises a completely new experience for the Prague show.
Basinski’s work has naturally found its way into the worlds of fashion, galleries, and visual culture. His music serves as a space for imagery, movement, and memory, whether in a gallery context, performative installations, or at the intersection of fashion and art. He has performed at Prada Mode Paris, his work has been featured on the soundtrack for Off-White runway shows, and The Disintegration Loops have also been performed in an orchestral arrangement at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
