Where can one find beauty in a world falling apart? California-based Maria BC ventures into the realms of dark folk, gothic, and ambient music to seek a path to resilience in the face of climate collapse. With her new album *Marathon*, Maria BC will perform on November 19 at Alfréd ve dvoře, presented by the Heartnoize collective.

While her debut full-length album Hayline was among the pinnacle works of ambient folk in 2022, her second album, Spike Field, took its ethereal sound formula a step further and, at the same time, closer to Maria BC’s inner feelings. This year’s album, Marathon, was born out of a sense of urgency, perseverance, and an almost self-destructive determination to show what it means not to give up.

Here, Maria BC grapples with upheavals in her personal life as well as on a global scale, and through gentle melodies, she explores where she can draw strength from. “A sense of hopelessness runs through the entire Marathon album, though it is as subtle as the album’s arrangements.

The stress and horrors of recent years have exhausted anyone who tries to keep up with world events, but the situation is likely getting even worse if, like Maria BC, you live in a country where civil liberties and environmental protection are actively being curtailed,” writes The Quietus magazine in its review of the album.

“These can certainly be motivating factors for creativity, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be a simplistic ‘hard times call for punk rock’ scenario, and Maria BC shows that even a gentle approach can effectively express these emotions.
